The football world has been left saddened following the sudden death of Alex Hughes, aged 38, the son of Wales legend and former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes.

Mark Hughes said he and his wife Jill were “totally heartbroken” by the loss of their son, describing the news as sudden and unexpected in a deeply emotional tribute shared through the League Managers Association.

Alex Hughes built a respected career in football both on and off the pitch. As a player, he had spells with Stockport County and Wrexham before stepping away from playing to move into performance analysis and recruitment.

He went on to work with several clubs, including Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham — all of which were at various times managed by his father. He also spent time leading a private football academy in Portugal, before later working as a player agent.

In recent years, Hughes continued his career in football recruitment, working with non-league sides AFC Fylde and Morecambe, before taking up a role as player recruitment lead at League Two club Grimsby Town in July last year.

In his tribute, Mark Hughes spoke not only as a football figure, but as a father grieving a profound personal loss.

“Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex,” he said.

“Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo.

“He had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all.”

Tributes have begun to emerge from across the football community, remembering Alex Hughes for his dedication to the game and the respect he earned throughout his career.

He leaves behind a young family, colleagues, and many friends within football who are mourning his passing.
